Cold, Wind No Match for Champion Bomber Squad
Ballard Scores 163 Team Points
MONROE — Battling cold temperatures and blustery winds, the Ballard girls track and field team delivered a complete, all-around performance to capture the team title at the PCM Invitational Monday night.
The Bombers piled up 163 team points to finish comfortably ahead of runner-up PCM (143), showcasing both top-end talent and depth across all 19 scored events. The win marks Ballard's third meet championship of the season.
Ballard's success was fueled by standout individual performances and consistent scoring throughout the lineup. In the sprints, Emefa VanLoo led the way with a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash (13.68), while Alea Kinzenbaw added a win in the 200 (28.91) and cleared 4-10 to take gold in the high jump.
The Bombers were equally strong in the hurdles, where Makiya Culbertson won the 100-meter hurdles (16.43) and Brooklyn Shoen captured the 400-meter hurdles title (1:11.88). Shoen also contributed in the field, placing second in the long jump (15-2.5).
Distance events provided key points as well. Avilee Miller paced Ballard with a win in the 1500-meter run (5:23.03), while Raya Miller added a third-place finish in the 800. Sydney Sage chipped in with a fourth-place effort in the 3000.
Ballard's relay teams played a major role in securing the title. The 4x400 relay team took first (4:19.44), and the distance medley relay added another gold (4:45.70). The Bombers also earned runner-up finishes in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays, along with a second-place showing in the 4x800.
In the field events, Esther Wilson led the way with a first-place throw in the discus (101-3), while adding points in the shot put. Teammates Cailey Horner and Wilson both scored in the shot put to bolster the team total.
Head coach Scott Barth credited the team's depth and resilience in challenging conditions.
"The cold front and wind made for a tough night, but the girls handled it really well," Barth said. "We followed our formula for success by scoring in a variety of events and using our depth to bring home a lot of medals. It was a great performance from start to finish."
With another strong showing in less-than-ideal weather, Ballard now turns its attention to the stretch run of the season.
"We proved we can compete both physically and mentally in tough conditions," Barth said. "Now we'll use our next meet as a tune-up for conference and see where we're at."
Ballard will be back in action Thursday, April 30 at the Van Meter Invitational, beginning at 4:30 PM.
