State Track Day #2-3: Bombers Battle Through Wet Weather
The Ballard women's track team finished days 2 and 3 strong at the State Track Meet. The distance medley team (Rachel Newell, Carley Wilson, Natalie Maher, and Caitlin Maher) finished 19th overall. Rachel Newell ran in the finals of the 100 M dash but was disqualified for false starting. Caitlin Maher capped off the weekend by finishing 13th in the 1500 M run.
Comments From Head Coach Scott Barth:
"The distance medley (Newell, Wilson, Maher and Maher) ran yesterday finishing 19th in class 3A. Our time on the day was 2 seconds off our season best time from the state qualifying meet, but still a solid time. Realistically we needed to cut 2 seconds to contend for a top 10 position, but that didn't materialize for us today and it wasn't from the lack of effort. Fortunately we return our final 3 legs next season and they all have potential to make even bigger gains next season. This event holds promise for us.
Rachel Newell returned Saturday for the 100 meter finals. She was running well coming off her career best time of 12.87 on Thursday. Unfortunately, she wobbled on the set position and was DQ'd in the event. That is painful to see, but it doesn't negate a stellar season for her. Her split and open 100 meter times were the best we have seen at Ballard in over a decade. She is a solid runner and will be missed for her athletic ability and leadership.
Caitlin Maher peaked at the right time finishing 13th in a career PR time of 5:01.45. She is really developing as a runner and gaining confidence with experience. She does get nervous, but has learned to manage it and perform well in big events. Expect great things from her in cross country and next year in track.
Overall, I am extremely proud of this year's team. We a making slight upticks in our ability and depth. This group is kept our progress moving forward. We return a large group heading into next season and will hopefully add some very talented freshmen next year. We are on the right track."
The women's track season has ended.
