Ballard Boys Cross Country Battles Tough Field at Williamsburg; Vance Qualifies for State
Ballard Scores 144 Team Points
WILLIAMSBURG, IA -- The Ballard men's cross country team wrapped up its season at the State Qualifying Meet in Williamsburg, finishing 6th overall in a deep and competitive field that saw Central DeWitt (48) and Grinnell (62) take the top two team spots. Despite narrowly missing a team berth to the state meet, the Bombers celebrated an individual accomplishment as senior Austin Vance punched his ticket to Fort Dodge.
Vance earned his second career state meet appearance, placing 15th overall with a season-best time of 16:54.9. His strong race capped a season marked by steady improvement and leadership at the top of Ballard's lineup.
Just behind him, junior Max Davidson ran one of his best races of the year, finishing 17th in 17:17.5, only two spots shy of qualifying individually. Davidson's performance was especially encouraging given his recent return from a shoulder injury that limited his training in the final stretch of the season.
Sophomore Graden Hermann followed in 26th place (17:42.2), showing grit after battling both illness and a late-season ankle sprain. Parker Domino (34th, 18:11.9) and Isaac Swisher (52nd, 18:51.3) rounded out the scoring for the Bombers, while Ethan Johnson (62nd, 19:25.8) and Evan Newman (64th, 19:43.4) completed the varsity lineup.
Head coach Scott Barth acknowledged that while the team fell short of its state qualification goal, there was plenty to be proud of. "We knew we'd have to put together a perfect race to advance, and it just wasn't in the cards this time," Barth said. "Austin ran an excellent race to qualify individually, and our guys competed hard despite setbacks to some of our top runners late in the season."
Despite those challenges, Barth emphasized the team's growth throughout the year. "We made a lot of great progress this season — culturally, competitively, and in coachability," he added. "If we can build on that foundation and stay healthy, this group has the potential to take another big step forward next fall. State didn't happen for us this year, but we're building something stronger for the future."
Vance will now turn his focus to the Iowa High School State Cross Country Meet on Friday, October 31, at 2:45 PM in Fort Dodge.
