Bombers Strong Effort At Winterset Invite
Bombers Excel In Meet Performance
The newly ranked men's cross country team competed in the Winterset Invitational Meet on Tuesday. Although no team score was kept, as athletes ran in accordance to their grade level, the Bombers would have scored 98 team points good enough for a third place finish.
Austin Shoen paced the Bombers with a 10th place finish running in a time of 18:10. Seth Pencook (13th) and Trent Payne (24th) finished in 18:36 and 19:13 respectively. Bradley Sage (25th - 19:19), Max Davidson (26th - 19:28), Jayden Leland (29th - 19:53), and Logan Huntrods (31st - 20:10) rounded out the Bomber's placing.
Comments From Head Coach Scott Barth:
"The boys are entering territory which we have not been in for a few years now as they enter the class 3A rankings at #19 this week. We have a solid mix of senior experience and freshman talent. We were once again led with senior medalis Austin Shoen with his 10th place finish overall. He was followed by fellow senior medalist Seth Pencook who took 13th place overall. Senior Trent Payne ran a good bounce-back performance placing 24th overall and was followed closely by our top junior, Bradley Sage in 25th place. Max Davidson continues to impress with his 3rd place medalist performance in the freshman race finishing 26th overall. Fellow freshman Jayden Leland was close at hand with his medalist performance placing 29th overall. Sophomore medalist Logan Huntrods closed out our varsity runners with a solid 31st place finish on a tough, hilly course. It would have been nice to have a been a bit closer to the #7 ranked Winterset team from class 3A, but we have time to get some training in and close the gap. Our boys are showing lots of growth from last season to this in our training (work ethic) and mix of experience and young talent entering. To make a run at a state meet appearance, we need to finetune a few things and not let up in our training. Being ranked is nice, but now we have to maintain and improve on that to get us where we need and want to be. The encouraging thing is, we do have some areas where we can show improvement and we will be working on them over the course of this season.A special shout out to freshman Peyton Johnson who ran a great race which would have put him in an overall placement in the low 30;s and just out of medal position for freshman boys."
The Bombers are back in action on Monday - September 12 when they compete in the Mike Carr Invitational Meet in Huxley. The meet will feature the middle school, junior varsity, and varsity and will start at 4:30 PM.
