The men's cross country team placed seventh at the Raccoon River Conference Meet at the Iowa State Cross Country Course on Monday. Austin Shoen placed 19th for the Bombers running in a time of 17:33. Gage Long and Seth Pencook finished in 27th and 37th places. Jack Chism (39th), Chase Brekke (42nd), Trent Payne (51st), and Wyatt Borg (55th) rounded out the Bomber's lineup. The Bombers scored 164 team points. North Polk won the meet scoring 32 team points. Carlisle finished second with 44 points.
Comments From Head Coach Scott Barth:
"The boys finished 7th in a very deep RRC boys meet. Realistically, we knew it would be tough to break into the top 3 with ranked teams in North Polk, Carlisle, and ADM. We also knew we more than likely would fall somewhere in the next 4 teams in the conference with Winterset, Gilbert, and Bondurant-Farrar. We ran a decent race, not necessarily our best race, and actually had several PR's on the night, but it was not enough to catch those 3. Although, we did make a good run on Gilbert and Bondurant-Farrar, we just came up short.
We were once again led by our 1-2 punch of Austin Shoen and Gage Long. Austin ran his PR of 17:33 to place 19th and Gage Long placed 27th in a time of 17:57. Seth Pencook continued his rise on the team running his PR of 18:13 which placed him 37th. Jack Chism placed 39th in a time of 18:32. Chase Brekke ran his PR of 18:45 to round out the scorers for our varsity team. Trent Payne and Wyatt Borg also ran solid races for us with times of 19:18 and 19:38. Kale Zimmerman also ran a solid race finishing the 5k JV course in a time of 19:27 - his personal PR.
So, as you can see, we had some solid performances tonight, but I am not sure if I would label it our best team performance on the season. We really do have a great conference and you have to be hitting 'on all cylinders' to place in the upper half of the RRC and I don't think we did that with everyone in our varsity line-up tonight. I am still proud of these guys though and I expect them to perform really well at the state qualifier next week. They have the right attitude and are training well. Our times are improving. We will get there."
The Bombers are back in action on Wednesday, October 21 when they compete at the state qualifying meet. The location is still unknown. The meet will start at 4:00 PM.
