Bomber's Season Ends In First Round Of Playoffs
Lewis Central Defeats Ballard 28-10
Council Bluffs, IA — The Ballard football season came to a close with a hard-fought 28-10 loss to Lewis Central in the first round of the state playoffs on Friday night. With a final record of 5-5 (3-2), Ballard put up a strong effort against a tough opponent but ultimately couldn't overcome Lewis Central's balanced attack.
Ballard's offensive efforts were led by sophomore quarterback Bryce Miller, who completed 12 of 24 passes for 94 yards, including a touchdown and an interception. Senior Tucker Vitzthum and senior Mason Gatchel also added to the passing game with one completion each, with Gatchel connecting for an 11-yard gain and Vitzthum for 9 yards. In total, Ballard completed 14 of 26 passes for 114 yards.
On the ground, the Bombers struggled to break free against a stout Lewis Central defense. Vitzthum led the team with 38 rushing yards on 9 carries, averaging 4.2 yards per carry. Junior Jude Gibson added 35 yards on 11 carries, contributing to the team's total of 104 rushing yards.
In the receiving game, Gibson also led the way with 4 catches for 46 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown that put Ballard on the scoreboard. Gatchel hauled in 5 receptions for 39 yards, while sophomore Parker Miller and senior Rhett Hedrick contributed with 2 catches each.
Defensively, senior Jackson Wacha was a standout, recording 15.5 tackles, including 11 solo stops, to lead all players on the field. Dillon Shoen and Caden Anderson added 6.5 and 6 tackles, respectively, with Anderson also recording a tackle for loss. Blake Brendeland recovered a fumble, while Vitzthum contributed on special teams with 84 kick return yards on two returns, giving the Bombers solid field position.
Special teams made an impact with Sam Hoffman converting a 40-yard field goal and an extra point, keeping Ballard within striking distance early on. Despite their efforts, the Bombers ultimately fell short, as Lewis Central's defense proved challenging to overcome.
