Bombers Drop District Contest To Comets
North Polk Defeats Ballard 29-8
The Ballard football team fell short on Friday night, losing 29-8 to district opponent North Polk in a tough Class 4A District 5 showdown. Despite a strong third-quarter surge, the Bombers couldn't overcome a slow start and a determined North Polk team.
North Polk opened the scoring in the first quarter with an 8-0 lead, followed by another touchdown before halftime, extending their advantage to 15-0. Ballard found some offensive rhythm in the third quarter when senior quarterback Mason Gatchel broke loose for a 25-yard touchdown run and added a successful two-point conversion, narrowing the score to 15-8. However, North Polk responded with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Offensively, Gatchel led Ballard, completing 6 of 11 passes for 67 yards but threw two interceptions. He was also the team's leading rusher with 48 yards on five carries, including the team's only touchdown. Senior Tucker Vitzthum added 28 rushing yards on 11 carries, while senior Rhett Hedrick contributed 26 yards on seven carries.
Ballard's defense, though under pressure for most of the game, saw a standout performance from senior Jackson Wacha, who led all tacklers with 16 total stops, including 13 solo. Junior Dillon Shoen and Hedrick each chipped in with 8 tackles, helping to keep the Bombers competitive throughout.
With the loss, the Bombers drop to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in district play. The Bombers will look to rebound next week when they host ADM in another District 5 contest on Friday, October 11, at 7:00 PM.
