Walk-Off Win Lifts Bombers Past Panthers in Season Opener
Ballard Defeats Knoxville 1-0
The Ballard baseball team opened its season in dramatic fashion Tuesday night, defeating Knoxville 1–0 in extra innings behind a walk-off hit from Ethan Rouse.
In a classic pitcher's duel, both teams were held scoreless through seven innings before Ballard broke through in the bottom of the eighth. With the game on the line, Rouse came through in the clutch, driving in the winning run to give the Bombers an immediate season-opening victory in front of the home crowd.
Ballard's pitching staff set the tone throughout the night. Sophomore Bowen Benedict was dominant early, tossing 4.0 shutout innings while striking out eight. Senior Michael Wiechmann followed with four strong innings of relief, striking out five and keeping Knoxville off the board to preserve the tie into extras.
Defensively, the Bombers were flawless, turning in a clean performance behind their pitchers and finishing with a 1.000 fielding percentage. The infield and outfield combined for several routine plays under pressure to keep Knoxville from breaking through.
Offensively, Ballard scattered four hits on the night, with contributions from Evan Kinzenbaw, Benedict, Landon Askelsen, and Rouse. Askelsen also added a key RBI opportunity earlier in the game, while Kinzenbaw and Benedict helped keep pressure on Knoxville's defense. Rouse ultimately delivered the game's biggest swing when it mattered most.
With the win, Ballard starts the season 1–0 and builds early momentum heading into conference play.
